Purpose of Position

This is an unclassified (exempt) position performing electrical engineering duties for the Engineering Department of the Grand River Dam Authority as assigned by the Chief Engineer.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports directly to the Chief Engineer or designated supervisor.

 

SUPERVISED PERSONNEL:  Normally does not supervise any other positions.  May assume specific temporary supervisory duties for certain project functions and/or training duties.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • With the assistance of transmission and substation engineers, identifies equipment, materials, parts, pieces, and processes which will be standardized by GRDA for use on its high voltage transmission system and within its substations.
  • Performs engineering studies concerning materials, equipment, and processes used at GRDA for construction, maintenance, and operations of utility facilities to determine suitability of particular components and assemblies to their planned uses.  Verifies that the components meet the requirements of strength, voltage, current capacity, insulation level, etc. for their planned uses.
  • Prepares AutoCAD drawings or diagrams of sub-assemblies which document standard construction configurations; identifies quantities of parts in sub-assemblies including name, stock number, manufacturer, etc.
  • Creates specifications; prepares bid documents; evaluates bids received; prepares and presents reports and recommendations as required for purchase of materials, equipment, services, and miscellaneous items associated with assigned projects.
  • Works with Purchasing and Warehouse departments to identify, label, and define needed quantities of materials and equipment for projects.
  • Collects and maintains accurate equipment ratings for use in planning studies and reports, and by other departments within GRDA. 
  • Reviews and remains current on applicable standards, guidelines, and regulations which may impact GRDA construction activities.
  • Creates, organizes, and maintains records for assigned oversight areas of department.
  • After-hours work may be required under system emergency or storm conditions.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.  Additional courses or practical experience in high voltage transmission systems, computer programming, and transmission or substation design are desirable. 

 

SPECIAL CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS, LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Must have a valid Oklahoma driver’s license. 

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Competency with personal computers including proficiency with AutoCAD and with Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word 
  • Must be capable of methodical, detailed analysis of complex technical problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form in a formal or informal presentation setting to an audience or an individual. 
  • Ability to travel, including overnight travel.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift, move, and carry weights of up to 30 lb. on an irregular basis.
  • Must possess mental, visual, and auditory acuity for attention to visual and auditory detail.  Manual dexterity is required for operation of computers and computer input equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & SAFETY CONCERNS:        

  • Work is usually performed in an office environment with outdoor excursions for verification of construction, inspection of facilities, and gathering physical data when necessary.
  • Some work may be performed outdoors and/or indoors in a high noise/high temperature environment with possible work in confined spaces. 
  • Assistance with emergency repair work may be required during inclement weather and at any time in any season.

 

JOB LOCATION:

Work is performed primarily at the Transmission headquarters near Pryor, Oklahoma.  Specific work sites and substation locations exist throughout the northeastern quarter of Oklahoma and/or other locations, as assigned.
