Habitat Enhancement Program

With names like duck potato and bass grass, its sounds as if the aquatic plants being transplanted to the shores of Grand Lake may appeal mostly to our friends with fins and feathers.

And that’s exactly the point. However, the cooperative habitat enhancement project, being undertaken by the Grand River Dam Authority, Oklahoma Water Resources Board and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, will yield benefits for more than just fish and fowl.

This new vegetation can help stabilize the shoreline, improve water quality, serve as a buffer against excessive nutrients in the water and have an overall positive impact on the function of Grand Lake’s ecosystem.

Aquatic plants:

. Provide cover for small fish
. Provide food for waterfowl
. Improve water quality by absorbing nutrients
. Increasing dissovled oxygen
. Improve water clarity
. Prevent shoreline erosion
