Purpose of Position

This is an unclassified (exempt) position intended to manage and direct all dam safety and related betterment efforts of the Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA).


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports to the Assistant General Manager of Generation.


SUPERVISED PERSONNEL: The preferred candidate possesses skill with management issues, and has potential for advancement to additional responsibility.



  • As      specialized hydro engineer, directs GRDA and contract personnel in the performance      of all issues related to dam safety and performance.
  • Oversees      dam safety inspections to ensure compliance with FERC policies,      procedures, and guidelines.
  • Serves      on dam safety engineering team performing potential dam studies.
  • Provide      engineering technical direction as necessary to assure safety and      performance.
  • Develop,      present, and implement projects for dam facility rehabilitation.
  • Establish      and oversee training for dam inspection, examination techniques, and dam      safety.
  • Develop      and implement long term capital projects.
  • May      serve as Chief Dam Safety Officer, as applied to Dam Safety Programs.
  • Assumes      management responsibility when required.
  • Represents      GRDA with public agencies regarding hydro issues.



  • Degree      in engineering; prefer civil engineering.       To be acceptable, the curriculum must be accredited by the Board      for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
  • Minimum      of six (6) years of relevant work experience.
  • Must      possess current registration as professional engineer in any state,      achieved by examination.  Must      achieve Oklahoma registration within six (6) months of employment.
  • College      transcript is required for verification of qualifying education.
  • Must      have expertise and experience with maintaining compliance with FERC dam      safety requirements.



Must have a valid driver’s license

Current Professional Engineer License

US Citizenship

Background security investigation will be performed


ADDITIONAL DESIRED EXPERIENCE:  Desired experience includes direct responsibility for dam safety projects, hydroelectric betterments, dam construction, dam operation and maintenance, FERC rules expertise, implementation of Dam Safety Programs, and performing required FERC dam safety inspections.  GRDA hydro generation technology includes Francis turbines, Kaplan turbines, and pump storage; experience with these technologies is desired.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:  Some work, which is critical to this position, involves walking, climbing stairs, and sitting for extended periods of time, lifting up to 30 pounds on irregular basis.  Must possess mental, visual, and auditory acuity for attention to visual and auditory detail.



  • Work      is performed in an office environment and at field locations.
  • Emergency      work may be required during inclement weather, especially flood      conditions.



  • The      Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) operates five FERC licensed dams, all located      in Mayes County, Oklahoma.  GRDA has      offices in both Mayes County and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  • Overnight      travel will be required from time-to-time.
